Nathan Miller
Principal Research Associate
Materials in Extreme Environments

Dr. Nathan Miller received his B.S. and M.S. degrees in Mechanical Engineering from Colorado State University in 2009 and 2010 after which he joined the Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) as a Research and Development engineer in the Advanced Engineering Analysis group. During his time at LANL, he supported modeling complex multi-component structures using finite elements and spearheaded the development of constitutive models for plastic bonded explosives (PBXs). He also lead the Advanced Simulation and Computing (ASC) Engineering Verification and Validation project and was PI for multiple Laboratory Directed Research and Development projects. During this period he received his Ph.D. in Civil Engineering from the Â鶹¹ÙÍø under the guidance of Dr. Richard Regueiro focusing on micromorphic higher order continuum theory. Nathan joined CU's Center for National Security Initiatives in 2023 as a Principal Research Associate in the hypersonics group lead by Dr. Iain Boyd. As a resarcher, Nathan is interested in the thermo-mechanical behavior of materials where the microstructure size approaches the macroscale such as in geomaterials, additively manufactured lattices, and some thermal protection systems leading to the use of higher order continuum methods for their simulation. He also has interests in the intersection of uncertainty quantification and propagation for materials and structures. Currently he is engaged in supporting the development of computational methods for chemically reacting materials subjected to hypersonic environments including phase change and mass flow, the response of thermal protection systems during re-entry, and the prediction of polymer bonded granular materials stress-deformation response.
