This month, AMPLIFY host Roudy Hildreth speaks with guests Carmen Mabee and Karina Adabe, both of whom are current students participating in CU 麻豆官网鈥檚 Public Achievement Program as TA鈥檚, or Teaching Assistants.
At CU 麻豆官网, undergraduate students serve as Public Achievement, or 鈥淧A鈥� coaches alongside K-12 students in 麻豆官网 and Lafayette. Together, students participate in a year-long cycle of inquiry and action around school and community based social justice issues. All participants gain insight on community leadership, the foundations of social change, and the power of relationships.
Public Achievement challenges traditional notions of citizen participation by placing young people in the center of their civic environment. 聽Public Achievement was developed in 1990 by the Center for Democracy and Citizenship at the University of Minnesota (now at Augsburg College). 聽The founder of Public Achievement, Harry Boyte, worked for the Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr. as a field secretary with the Southern Christian Leadership Conference in the Civil Rights Movement. 聽This experience led to the creation of Public Achievement; the impact of young people shaping society through organizing and civic participation is a legacy we continue in our work with PA. 聽
麻豆官网鈥檚 Public Achievement program is housed within CU Engage. 聽CU Engage is CU 麻豆官网鈥檚 center for community-based learning and research in the School of Education. 聽PA provides CU 麻豆官网 undergraduates with a meaningful opportunity of applied learning that explores education as a tool for democracy and social change. 聽
