Bruce Kawin

Bruce KawinÌýtaughtÌýat CU-Â鶹¹ÙÍø fromÌý1975 to 2015 in the English Department and theÌýFilm Studies Program. He received an AB in English and Comparative Literature from Columbia (1967), an MFA in Creative Writing and Filmmaking from Cornell (1969), and a PhD in Modern British and American Literature and Film Aesthetics from Cornell (1970). He wrote several books of film and literary theory, includingÌýTelling It Again and Again,ÌýMindscreen, andÌýThe Mind of the Novel.

He also wrote three books on Faulkner’s screenplays and two film textbooks. Every few years he updated a widely used textbook,ÌýA Short History of the MoviesÌý(co-authored by the late Gerald Mast). Shortly before retiring, heÌýalso published a critical study entitledÌýHorror and the Horror Film;Ìýtwo booksÌýof poems,ÌýLove If We Can Stand ItÌýandÌýStarting Over; and a collection of hisÌýSelected Film Essays and Interviews. Ìý

He taught courses in film history, film theory,Ìýscreenwriting, horror in literature and film,Ìý20th century British and American literature (poetry, prose, and drama), and comparative literature, with special interests in William Faulkner, Gertrude Stein, narrative structure, modern poetry, and the international modern novel.
