HUMN 2100 Art, Culture, and Media

Culture and Art are BIG terms most often used to indicate something great, lasting, and monolithic. In this course, we'll deconstruct this idea by focusing on the division between so-called high and low art and culture through an exploration of Popular Culture.Ìý

From pop stars to cult movies and superheroes to social media, we'll examine pop culture as an accessible, democratic force in the world. Along the way, our fundamental question will be how do we understand who we are as individuals and as Americans, and how are our values shaped as a result of our interaction with popular culture forms (images, comic books, films, video, TV, social media, etc.)?Ìý

In the end, we'll come to understand culture as a dynamic medium in which we participate and to which we contribute. To this end, the class will engage not only in the analysis of pop culture artifacts, but in their production, as well.Ìý
