CU-Â鶹¹ÙÍø Chancellor Richard L. Byyny will host a book signing for the "Atlas of the New West," a project of the Center of the American West, on Thursday, Dec. 4, from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. in the Center for British Studies on the fifth floor of Norlin Library.
William Riebsame, a professor of geography who headed up the project with CU-Â鶹¹ÙÍø cartography director James Robb, will give a slide presentation about the atlas at the beginning of the program.
CU Distinguished Professor Charles F. Wilkinson, a natural resources and Indian law expert, and history Professor Patricia Nelson Limerick, a nationally known Western historian, also will be on hand to talk about the atlas and to sign books. Each contributed feature essays to the book.
The signing is an opportunity for Â鶹¹ÙÍø area residents and people on campus to learn more about the center and its programs. The center was established to survey the region, bring together people from every Western cultural tradition and foster dialogue on Western issues ranging from public lands and community development to Western art and literature.
The atlas uses 46 maps to illustrate changes throughout the region: locations of brew pubs, New Age communities, cowboy poetry festivals, dude ranches, Internet access points and other places of interest. The "Atlas of the New West" captures the many cultural, commercial and environmental forces transforming todayÂ’s American West.
The atlas will be available for purchase at the signing, or guests can bring their own pre-purchased copies of the book for signing.
