The McNair Scholars Program at the University of Colorado at Â鶹¹ÙÍø is accepting fall applications through Aug. 15.
Designed to help students underrepresented in graduate education to attain doctoral degrees, the program is named for Ronald McNair, an African-American astronaut killed in the 1986 Challenger explosion.
Participants receive a $2,400 stipend for completion of extensive research projects to be presented at local and national conferences. The program also assists students in applying to graduate school by offering Graduate Record Examination preparation courses and application fee waivers to select universities and colleges.
There are currently 25 CU-Â鶹¹ÙÍø McNair scholars from various academic majors including physics, ethnic studies, journalism, psychology, sociology, geological sciences, Spanish and theatre. Students are encouraged to pursue research projects in a variety of academic fields.
To be eligible to join the McNair Scholars Program, undergraduates must be either low-income, first-generation college students or come from groups underrepresented in graduate education. Prior to being accepted into the program, students must have completed at least 60 academic credit hours, have a minimum 2.8 grade point average and be U.S. citizens or residents.
