A cornerstone ceremony for the new Humanities building at the University of Colorado at Â鶹¹ÙÍø will be held on Friday, March 19, at 4 p.m.
At the ceremony, which will be held at the building construction site on Norlin Quadrangle, the cornerstone will be set and a time capsule placed behind the cornerstone.
CU-Â鶹¹ÙÍø Chancellor Richard L. Byyny, Peter D. Spear, dean of the College of Arts and Sciences, David K. White, project contractor, and William Deno, campus architect, will each speak at the ceremony and place an item in the time capsule. They will discuss the building's impact on CU-Â鶹¹ÙÍø, the humanities discipline in the College of Arts and Sciences, the role of the building contractors and the history of cornerstones on campus.
The Humanities building is being constructed on the last remaining site fronting on the historic Norlin Quadrangle. It will follow in the same architectural style as Norlin Library and other buildings on campus and will house several "smart" classrooms, four departments and offices. The classics, East Asian languages and civilizations, French and Italian, and religious studies departments will be located there.
The building is designed to embody not only the centrality, but also the cultural, historical and disciplinary complexity of today's humanities programs.
The completion date for the building is January 2000. The architectural firm is Bennett Wagner & Grody and the project general contractor is Swinerton & Walberg Builders.
A reception and tour will follow the ceremony.
