The University of Colorado at Â鶹¹ÙÍø will confer 1,888 degrees on Friday, Dec. 22, during university commencement ceremonies at the Coors Events/Conference Center.
The winter commencement ceremony will begin at 9:30 a.m. and last about an hour. Guests are expected to be in their seats by 9:10 a.m., and since no tickets are required for the ceremony, early arrival is strongly suggested.
CU-Â鶹¹ÙÍø will award 1,353 bachelorÂ’s degrees, 394 masterÂ’s degrees, 131 doctoral degrees and 10 law degrees. The College of Arts and Sciences will lead the bachelorÂ’s degree count with 875 degrees, followed by Business with 202, Engineering with 152, Journalism with 54, Architecture and Planning with 50 and Music with 20. The Graduate School will award 503 degrees and the Business Graduate School 22 degrees.
CU-Â鶹¹ÙÍø astronomy Professor Richard McCray will give the commencement address. McCray is the George Gamow Distinguished Professor in the Astrophysical and Planetary Sciences Department, a member of the prestigious National Academy of Science and a Guggenheim fellow. He also is a fellow at JILA, a joint institute of CU-Â鶹¹ÙÍø and the National Institute of Standards and Technology.
McCray joined the faculty at CU-Â鶹¹ÙÍø in 1971 and is currently studying supernovae using NASAÂ’s Hubble Space Telescope and JapanÂ’s ASCA X-ray telescope. His recent research has focused on Supernova 1987A, the brightest supernova discovered in nearly 400 years.
CU President Elizabeth Hoffman will read the traditional Norlin Charge for the first time in her tenure as president. The charge was originally given by former CU President George Norlin to the graduating class of 1935.
Free parking for commencement guests will be available in the Regent Drive Autopark and other lots near the Coors Events/Conference Center, and at all campus meters. The meters along Regent Drive and lots 430 and 440 north of the Events/Conference Center will be reserved for elderly and disabled guests.
