The Student Organization for Alumni Relations has announced the 2001 teaching award recipients of the 40th Annual Teaching Recognition Awards at CU-Â鶹¹ÙÍø.

Presented each spring since 1962, SOAR's Teaching Recognition Awards honor faculty members who excel in the classroom. The SOAR awards are the only faculty honors in which the selection and administration is done by CU-Â鶹¹ÙÍø undergraduate students.

Awarded in four class-size categories, each winner receives $1,500 from the CU Parents Association and the Alumni Association's Directors Club.

Students were asked to nominate their favorite faculty members online or by campus mail. Matt Hiser, director of student relations for the CU-Â鶹¹ÙÍø Alumni Association, said he received nearly 200 nominations, up from 50 to 60 in the past.

"The number of nominations is a powerful testament to the quality of teaching at CU-Â鶹¹ÙÍø," Hiser said.

The 2001 Teaching Recognition Award winners are:

* Joanne Belknap, associate professor of women's studies, in the 76 to 175 class-size category.

* Michael Dubson, a physics instructor, in the 176 and above class-size category.

* Curtis Le Baron, assistant professor in the communications department, in the 25 to 75 class-size category.

* and Elizabeth Robertson, associate professor and chair of the English department, in the under 25 class-size category.

While in the past the awards were presented in one main ceremony, this year they were presented individually to the teachers during the classes from which they were nominated.
