The University of Colorado Student Government has issued an opinion that affects the results ofÌýtheÌýrecently conducted student government election.ÌýAs chancellor,ÌýI recognize andÌýfullyÌýsupport the right of the students to elect their own leadership and to administer the processes for those elections.

ThatÌýauthorityÌýisÌýdelegated to them by the Board of Regents, and the Board of Regents has determined that student governmentsÌýon each campus are to be responsible to the chancellor of that campus.ÌýI have the responsibility to ensure that the University of Colorado Student Government has conducted its affairs consistent with campus policies and procedures, the laws of the Board of Regents, and the laws of Colorado.Ìý

Due to the recent confusion and challenges to the election that have been raised,ÌýI will review theÌýprocesses employed and theÌýdecisions made to this point to ensure that theyÌýwere administered appropriately. I will conduct my review expeditiouslyÌýin conjunction with the vice chancellor for student affairs and the university’s legal counselÌýand without any preference to any of the candidates.Ìý

My goal is toÌýensure that we have a transparent process that conforms to campus policiesÌýand procedures and that all such elections are conducted fairly and openly. I look forward toÌýworking with the leaders of CU Student Government to advance the needs of all CU-Â鶹¹ÙÍø students.

Philip P. DiStefano, Chancellor
