Researchers from the University of Colorado at Â鶹¹ÙÍø will be flying several biomedical and agricultural experiments on NASA's space shuttle Atlantis slated for launch Oct. 2, some of which will be transferred to the International Space Station.

The mechanical engineering department at the University of Colorado at Â鶹¹ÙÍø plans to celebrate its centennial with a yearlong series of events. The discipline has shown a great evolution from the early years of the Industrial Revolution to the present day development of micro- and nano-scale technologies. Likewise, CU-Â鶹¹ÙÍø's mechanical engineering department, established in 1902, has grown from a small class of nine students to an enrollment of 460 undergraduate and 99 graduate students in 2002.

Candice Bowen, director of the Office of Sexual Harassment Policy at the University of Colorado at Â鶹¹ÙÍø, will take on expanded responsibilities as director of a newly formed Office of Sexual Harassment Policy and Labor Relations. The appointment will be effective Sept. 30, 2002. At that time, the new office directed by Bowen will be transferred to the Administration Division, headed by Vice Chancellor Paul Tabolt. The Sexual Harassment Policy Office was in Student Affairs, headed by Vice Chancellor Ron Stump.

University of Colorado at Â鶹¹ÙÍø physics Professor Allan Franklin will deliver the 95th annual Distinguished Research Lecture on Tuesday, Oct. 8, at 5:30 p.m. in CU-Â鶹¹ÙÍø's Fiske Planetarium. The lecture, titled "Experiment, Evidence and Science," is free and open to the public. The talk is sponsored by the Council on Research and Creative Work through the CU-Â鶹¹ÙÍø Graduate School and will be followed by a reception.

A new energy conservation officer has been named to help reduce utility consumption at the University of Colorado at Â鶹¹ÙÍø in a strategic move by Vice Chancellor Paul Tabolt to reduce energy demand and associated costs throughout campus. Moe Tabrizi, an industrial engineer and former senior manager in the high-tech industry, is charged with developing, evaluating and implementing utility conservation measures to reverse a trend of increased campus energy use in recent years. Tabrizi will report to Jeff Lipton, executive director of Facilities Management.

Mary Fran Myers, co-director of the Natural Hazards Center at the University of Colorado at Â鶹¹ÙÍø, has been presented a newly established award from the Gender and Disaster Network that will hereafter be known as the "Mary Fran Myers Award." The award was presented this month in recognition of Myers' sustained efforts to launch the worldwide network among disaster professionals, for advancing women's careers and for promoting research on gender issues in disaster research in emergency management and higher education.

The Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, Transgender Resource Center at CU-Â鶹¹ÙÍø will celebrate Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer Awareness Month in October with 53 events, the largest in the program's history. Events include speakers, a film festival, panels, discussions and exhibits. All CU-Â鶹¹ÙÍø events are free and open to the public.

University of Colorado at Â鶹¹ÙÍø Associate Professor Daniel Jurafsky has been named a 2002 winner of the MacArthur Fellowship, commonly known as the "genius grant." Jurafsky, an associate professor of linguistics and computer science, is the sixth CU-Â鶹¹ÙÍø faculty member to win the prestigious award from the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation of Chicago. Jurafsky, 39, was one of 24 recipients of the 2002 "no-strings attached" funding. He will receive $500,000.
