The Urban Land Institute has honored University of Colorado Real Estate Center Director Byron Koste with the 2002 Pathfinder Award. The Pathfinder Award is given annually to individuals who advance ULI's mission to provide responsible leadership to enhance the total environment. ULI is the premier professional organization in the real estate industry.

With about 4,000 people expected to attend the final University of Colorado at Â鶹¹ÙÍø summer commencement exercises Aug. 10 at 8:30 a.m. on the historic Norlin Quadrangle, attendees should plan to arrive early. Free parking will be available in the Euclid Avenue Autopark, lot 204 off 18th Street and Broadway, lot 310 off 18th Street and Wardenburg Drive and in lot 308 at Regent Drive and Kittredge Loop Road. Lot 359 and the Regent Drive Autopark are also open and free.

Mary Covell, business manager of the University Memorial Center at the University of Colorado at Â鶹¹ÙÍø, has been appointed to the position of associate director, according to Carlos Garcia, UMC director. The appointed has been approved by Chancellor Richard Byyny and is effective immediately. She replaces former assistant director J.C. Ancell, who retired in January.

Ana Gutierrez, a junior ranked second in her class at Aurora Central High School, is this year's recipient of the Leadership, Excellence, Achievement and Diversity scholarship awarded by the CU Parents Association. The award was presented to Gutierrez at a July banquet for high school students who successfully completed the CU-Â鶹¹ÙÍø Pre-Collegiate Development Summer Residential Program. The award consists of $10,000 divided into four annual supplements of $2,500.

The University of Colorado at Â鶹¹ÙÍø is launching a national search for a director of the Center for Advanced Training in Engineering and Computer Science. Vince Micucci, CATECS director, has announced his retirement, effective Feb. 7, 2003. CATECS, a program of the Division of Continuing Education, serves as the distance learning arm of CU-Â鶹¹ÙÍø's College of Engineering and Applied Science.

The University of Colorado at Â鶹¹ÙÍø has begun a national search for a new executive director of university communications, a position vacated in early July by the departure of Bobbi Barrow who left the university to join Denver Health. Ric Porreca, senior vice chancellor and chief financial officer at CU-Â鶹¹ÙÍø, has been named chair of the search committee. Porreca said the campus is in the process of selecting members to serve on the search committee, which will begin work immediately. He expects a new executive director will be named during the fall semester.

Twenty-five elementary and high school science teachers entered a dream laboratory of forests, ponds, streams and wildlife northwest of Â鶹¹ÙÍø July 27 to begin a week of living and breathing Earth science. The teachers are participating in Earthworks, an annual professional development program sponsored by CU-Â鶹¹ÙÍø's Cooperative Institute for Research in Environmental Sciences, or CIRES.

Faculty and students at the University of Colorado at Â鶹¹ÙÍø may soon be granting wishes for Colorado schools and nonprofit and community organizations as part of a new program called the Wish List. In an effort to encourage academic partnerships with Colorado communities, CU-Â鶹¹ÙÍø is compiling a list of needs and requests from around the state. The Wish List will serve as a resource for faculty and academic programs that want to incorporate experiential learning opportunities into the course curriculum.

The University of Colorado at Â鶹¹ÙÍø will confer 1,177 degrees during the university's final summer commencement ceremony Saturday, Aug. 10, at 8:30 a.m. on the Norlin Quadrangle. Last winter, the Council of Deans, associate deans, Chancellor Richard L. Byyny and the commencement committee agreed to eliminate the CU-Â鶹¹ÙÍø August commencement ceremony beginning in 2003, according to Jeanne McDonald, commencement coordinator. "This decision was made due to the low number of participants we have had at the August ceremony," McDonald said.
