Prize money for the University of Colorado at Â鶹¹ÙÍø's 2000 business plan competition, scheduled Dec. 13 on campus, is at its highest level ever, putting CU's event in the top tier of business-plan competitions in the nation. The 2000 Bank One Business Plan Competition gives students the opportunity to present a comprehensive plan supporting an innovative concept for a product or service.

The communication department at the University of Colorado at Â鶹¹ÙÍø received five awards at the annual meeting of the National Communication Association last month. Communication Professor Gerard Hauser received the Marie Hochmuth Nichols Award for his book "Vernacular Voices: The Rhetoric of Publics and Public Spheres." Hauser, who is chair of the communication department, is the author of two books and numerous research articles.

An article to be published in the U.S. Department of EducationÂ’s Winter 2000 newsletter will feature the Web site CU 4 K12, which gives teachers access to information and educational programs from the University of Colorado at Â鶹¹ÙÍø for use in the classroom. The site is at www.colorado.edu/cu4k12 . The Department of Education newsletter circulates to 8,000 schools regionally covering Colorado, Wyoming, Montana, South Dakota and Utah.

People waking up on Christmas morning to find a piece of the sun missing will be relieved to know that Santa didnÂ’t give it away as a gift. Rather they will be seeing the final solar eclipse of the second millennium. About 40 percent of the sun will be covered at the peak of the partial eclipse, when the moon passing between the Earth and sun will cast a shadow over Colorado, according to experts at the Sommers-Bausch Observatory at the University of Colorado at Â鶹¹ÙÍø.

AlaskaÂ’s Columbia Glacier, heralded as the worldÂ’s speediest glacier, appears to be on a course to disintegrate and evolve into a spectacular fjord rivaling Glacier Bay in the coming years, according to a University of Colorado at Â鶹¹ÙÍø researcher.

The School of Journalism and Mass Communication at the University of Colorado at Â鶹¹ÙÍø will hold its first Creative Exhibit by Advanced Advertising Students Dec. 13-27 at the Dairy Center for the Arts. An opening reception for the exhibit, along with a ceremony for recipients of the One Club scholarship awards, will be held Dec. 13 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the center, 2590 Walnut St. in Â鶹¹ÙÍø.

The University of Colorado at Â鶹¹ÙÍøÂ’s Undergraduate Research Opportunities Program and the Residential Academic Program in Baker Hall are facilitating extensive undergraduate participation in faculty research. The Baker Hall Academic Program is designed for incoming CU-Â鶹¹ÙÍø freshmen and sophomores who plan to focus on natural sciences and environmental studies with a strong research orientation. The program offers small classes and provides students with numerous research opportunities working alongside some of CU-Â鶹¹ÙÍøÂ’s top faculty researchers.

"Controversial Election? The 2000 Election in Historical Perspective," will be the subject of a talk Dec. 6 in the continuing history lecture series sponsored by the University of Colorado at Â鶹¹ÙÍø Office of Community Affairs and Front Range Community College. Andy DeRoche, history instructor at Front Range Community College, will discuss past presidential elections that were crises for the country, including elections of 1800, 1824 and 1860 involving historical figures such as Thomas Jefferson, Aaron Burr, John Quincy Adams, Andrew Jackson and Abraham Lincoln.

The University of Colorado at Â鶹¹ÙÍø has been awarded an outstanding publication certificate of merit in the electronic category from the National Academic Advising Association (NACADA) for its RalphieÂ’s Info Center online advising publication.

Students will display their research in photonics at a poster session from 5 p.m. to 6:30 p.m.
