Skyview High School Student Awarded CU Parents Association Scholarship

Gabriel Meraz, a senior honors student at Skyview High School in Thornton, is this year's recipient of the CU Leadership, Excellence, Achievement and Diversity scholarship awarded by the Parents Association at the University of Colorado at Â鶹¹ÙÍø. The scholarship consists of $10,000 divided into four annual supplements of $2,500. The award was presented to Meraz at a July 18 banquet for high school students who successfully completed the CU-Â鶹¹ÙÍø Pre-Collegiate Development Summer Residential Program.

A University of Colorado at Â鶹¹ÙÍø expert on nation building warns against the premature withdrawal of U.S. occupation forces from Iraq following comments made by Paul Bremer, the U.S. administrator in Iraq. Bremer was quoted in the July 16 editions of the Washington Post and New York Times as saying that coalition forces likely will depart Iraq after the first elections are held.

Islamic fundamentalism and pollution from abandoned mines are the final two topics to be discussed as the University of Colorado at Â鶹¹ÙÍø's Reynolds Lecture Series wraps up in late July and early August. "Cleaning Up Waters Polluted by Abandoned Mines: Obstacles and Opportunities" will be presented July 29 by engineering Associate Professor Joseph Ryan. Religious studies Professor Frederick Denny will present "Whither Islam and the Muslims? Emerging Progressivist Challenges to Fundamentalism" on Aug. 4.

Teens To Debate War, Feminism At CU-Â鶹¹ÙÍø Philosophy Camp

Giving up a week of summer vacation to debate classic conundrums of philosophy isn't on a typical high school student's radar, but the participants of this year's Summer Philosophy Institute of Colorado at the University of Colorado at Â鶹¹ÙÍø are tackling philosophical issues through July 19th. The Institute - now in its ninth year - is an outreach program of the CU-Â鶹¹ÙÍø philosophy department and is sponsored by a grant from the CU Outreach Council and the Office of Community Affairs.
