Water Expert To Speak At CU-Â鶹¹ÙÍø On Jan. 25

University of Washington water expert Dennis Lettenmaier will speak on Jan. 25 on the evolution of hydrological models for long-range stream flow forecasting and their potential for assessing climate change on western U. S. water resources. Free and open to the public, the 4 p.m. talk, "Implications of Hydrologic Variability and Change for Western Water Management," will be held in the auditorium of the Cooperative Institute for Research in Environmental Sciences. The CIRES auditorium is room 338 in the CIRES building on the University of Colorado at Â鶹¹ÙÍø campus.

Activist Tommie Lee Watkins Jr. Featured During CU's Black Awareness Month Feb. 4

Reverend Tommie Lee Watkins, Jr., a gay activist and ordained minister, will be the guest speaker for a Black Awareness Month event at the University of Colorado at Â鶹¹ÙÍø on Feb. 4 at 7 p.m. in the Eaton Humanities Building, room 1B50. Watkins, 26, was a U.S. Naval Academy midshipman who was discharged under the military's "Don't ask, don't tell" policy in 1997. Following the dismissal he defeated a lawsuit filed by the academy to recover his $90,000 scholarship.

Original CU Wizard To Give Show About Electricity Jan. 26

University of Colorado at Â鶹¹ÙÍø physics Professor John Taylor, also known as the original "Mr. Wizard," will electrify the audience during the Jan. 26 CU Wizards show "Shocking Facts About Electricity." The free hour-long show will begin at 9:30 a.m. in Duane Physics room G1B30 on the Â鶹¹ÙÍø campus.

Internationally Noted Archaeologist To Speak At CU-Â鶹¹ÙÍø On Jan. 26

Professor Ian Hodder of Stanford University, one of the world's experts on archaeological theory, will speak at the University of Colorado at Â鶹¹ÙÍø Jan. 26 on the archaeology and artwork of a renowned 9,000-year-old site in Turkey. Sponsored by the CU-Â鶹¹ÙÍø anthropology department and funded by a department alumnus, the Seventh Annual Distinguished Archaeology Lecture will be held at 6 p.m. in room 270 of the Hale Science Building. The free public event will be followed by a question-and-answer session with the audience.

CU-Â鶹¹ÙÍø Linguist Wins Humboldt Research Award

The Alexander von Humboldt Foundation of Germany has selected University of Colorado at Â鶹¹ÙÍø linguistic studies Professor Zygmunt Frajzyngier to receive the prestigious Humboldt Research Award in recognition of his past accomplishments in research and teaching. The award is presented annually to 150 researchers with internationally recognized academic qualifications in a variety of disciplines, and is intended as a lifelong tribute to the winners' past academic accomplishments.

When city slickers dress up in cowboy boots and Wranglers to attend the National Western Stock Show, they often view livestock as pet-like animals. Many have a hard time thinking of the animals as the source of the steak dinner or hamburger they eat. Lisa Peñaloza, associate professor of marketing at CU-Â鶹¹ÙÍø's Leeds School of Business, explains how cultural meanings and values are created by the juxtaposition of ranchers and non-ranchers in her paper, "Consuming the American West: Animating Cultural Meaning and Memory at a Stock Show and Rodeo."

CU-Â鶹¹ÙÍø Professor Elected To Head International Communication Association

Robert T. Craig, professor and chair of the communication department at CU-Â鶹¹ÙÍø, has been named president-elect of the International Communication Association. The ICA is a 51-year-old organization of more than 3,200 communication scholars and practitioners from some 60 countries. It promotes the systematic study of communication theories, processes and skills.
