CU-Â鶹¹ÙÍø Professor Who Discovered Ancient Turkish Church To Present Community Lecture On Sept. 13

Internationally known underwater archaeologist and CU-Â鶹¹ÙÍø history Professor Robert Hohlfelder will kickoff the fall 2000 ChancellorÂ’s Community Lecture Series on Wednesday, Sept. 13, with his presentation "Swimming Over Time: A Survey of the Submerged Ruins of Aperlae." All talks in the ChancellorÂ’s Community Lecture Series will be at 7 p.m. in the Chapel at The Academy, located at 970 Aurora Ave. in Â鶹¹ÙÍø. The monthly lectures are free and open to the public.

UMAS To Host Annual Chicano History Week Activities At CU-Â鶹¹ÙÍø

In recognition of Chicano History Week the United Mexican American Students organization on the CU-Â鶹¹ÙÍø campus will host a series of panel presentations Sept. 12-14. The annual event will address issues that are important to the Chicano community while revisiting the history of the Chicano activist movement, according to Teresa Estrada, UMAS council chair. The panels are meant to promote cultural education, appreciation and respect. "We always want to make sure that we involve ourselves in teaching the community about our history," Estrada said.

CU-Â鶹¹ÙÍø Engineering Dean Ross Corotis Resigns, Holds Business Challenge Professorship

Fiske Planetarium at the University of Colorado at Â鶹¹ÙÍø will explore the red planet during "Mars Quest," Friday, Sept. 15, at 7:30 p.m. at the planetarium. The pre-recorded show examines the history of humankindÂ’s exploration of Mars, glancing in at the planet from space and exploring its surface. The show also delves into the question of life on Mars.

U.S. News Ranks CU-Â鶹¹ÙÍø 26th Among Top Public Universities

The University of Colorado at Â鶹¹ÙÍø tied for 26th in the 2000 ranking of the nationÂ’s top public four-year institutions in U.S. News & World ReportÂ’s annual Best Colleges issue, moving up from 31st in 1999. CU-Â鶹¹ÙÍø was tied with the Colorado School of Mines, Indiana University-Bloomington, the University of California-Santa Cruz, the University of Delaware, Virginia Tech and Miami University of Oxford, Ohio.

CU Set To Fly Biomedical Experiments On September Space Shuttle Flight

University of Colorado at Â鶹¹ÙÍø researchers will test the effects of low gravity on two biomedical experiments aboard the upcoming flight of NASAÂ’s space shuttle Atlantis, now slated for liftoff Sept. 8 from Cape Kennedy, Fla. to the International Space Station.

CU-Â鶹¹ÙÍø Department Of Housing To Host Annual Global Jam Sept. 14

The Housing Department at the University of Colorado at Â鶹¹ÙÍø will hold its annual Global Jam smorgasbord of culturally diverse foods on Thursday, Sept. 14, from 4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. on Farrand Field. The special meal is meant to raise awareness about other cultures through ethnic entertainment and cuisine, according to Peggy Bonner, a CU-Â鶹¹ÙÍø residence hall director. This yearÂ’s menu will offer foods from Africa, Brazil, the European Alps and down-home Southern cooking.

Rodriguez Del Pino Memorial Service Set For Sept. 9 At CU-Â鶹¹ÙÍø

A memorial service for Salvador Rodriguez del Pino, former professor of ethnic studies and Chicano studies at the University of Colorado at Â鶹¹ÙÍø, is set for 2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 9, in Old Main Chapel. Immediately following the service, a remembrance potluck will be held at Koenig Alumni Center. Participants are asked to bring a main dish to serve six to eight people and a salad or dessert. Cooking facilities are not available. Beverages and utensils will be provided.

CU-Â鶹¹ÙÍø Plans Additional Safety Improvements On Campus

A number of safety improvements are in place at the University of Colorado at Â鶹¹ÙÍø for the 2000-2001 school year and more are on the way. More than $300,000 in lighting improvements have been completed on the CU-Â鶹¹ÙÍø campus over the past year. Another $300,000 is expected to be spent on lighting projects this year in an ongoing effort to improve campus safety, according to Jim Fadenrecht, public safety director at CU-Â鶹¹ÙÍø.
