The University of Colorado at Â鶹¹ÙÍø has been awarded an outstanding publication certificate of merit in the electronic category from the National Academic Advising Association (NACADA) for its RalphieÂ’s Info Center online advising publication.

Editors: Reporters and photographers are invited to attend the next quarterly meeting of the Colorado Photonics Industry Association, hosted by CU-Â鶹¹ÙÍø at 3:30 p.m. Dec. 7 in the University Memorial Center's Glenn Miller Ballroom. Students will display their research in photonics at a poster session from 5 p.m. to 6:30 p.m.

Someday the typical classroom may look a lot like two new ones in CU-Â鶹¹ÙÍøÂ’s Eaton Humanities Building, with rows of computers all linked to each other and the dayÂ’s coursework displayed on several large projection screens. The classrooms, one equipped with 18 Macintosh G4 computers and one with 23 Dell Pentium IIIÂ’s, have state-of-the-art equipment throughout and an interactive network design linking the instructor and students as never before. The high-tech equipment has created strong demand among faculty who are finding new ways to use computers in the classroom.

John Lymberopoulos, a professor of international business and finance at the University of Colorado at Â鶹¹ÙÍø, has been elected to the board of governors of Beta Gamma Sigma. As a member of the board, Lymberopoulos will help govern more than 440,000 Beta Gamma Sigma members worldwide. His term will run through June 2004.

CU-Â鶹¹ÙÍø students will deliver 50 Buffalo Hugs pillows to children at Dental Aid and the San Juan/Broadway PeopleÂ’s Clinic in Â鶹¹ÙÍø on Wednesday, Dec. 6, continuing a program begun this fall to comfort young patients during visits to the dentist or doctor. Deliveries of 25 Buffalo Hugs each to the Dental Aid Â鶹¹ÙÍø Clinic, 4155 Darley Avenue, Suite C, and the San Juan/Broadway PeopleÂ’s Clinic, 3100 34th St., will be at 9:30 a.m. at Dental Aid and at 10:15 a.m. at the PeopleÂ’s Clinic.

Judith Kipper, an internationally known expert on issues in the Middle East including Arab-Israeli relations and the peace process, will visit the University of Colorado at Â鶹¹ÙÍø campus Dec. 5 and Dec. 6 as a guest of the World Affairs Athenaeum program. Kipper will talk about "Threats and Challenges: Assessing U.S. Interests in the Middle East" during a public forum Tuesday, Dec. 5, from 4 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. in the Eaton Humanities Building, room 150.

University of Colorado at Â鶹¹ÙÍø Professor Webster Cash will continue the Fall 2000 ChancellorÂ’s Community Lecture Series on Wednesday, Dec. 13, with a presentation on "Cosmic Journeys: Visiting Stars and Black Holes with the Telescopes of the Future." A professor in the department of astrophysical and planetary sciences, Cash will talk about the next generations of X-ray telescopes in space, which will be able to provide extremely high resolutions of distant stellar objects. The talk is at 7 p.m. in the chapel at The Academy, 970 Aurora Ave., in Â鶹¹ÙÍø.

Presentation of the National Medal of Science to Distinguished Professor Emeritus Gilbert F. White of the University of Colorado at Â鶹¹ÙÍø will be carried live by webcast and satellite feed beginning at 5:30 p.m. MST on Friday, Dec. 1. White and the other laureates will meet with President Clinton Friday morning for individual and group pictures by the official presidential photographer. The photos will be posted Friday afternoon at http://www.ostp.gov .

Although the smoke has cleared from the forest fires that ravaged the West last summer, including the foothills of ColoradoÂ’s Jefferson and Larimer counties, debate over the effectiveness of current wildfire management practices continues. Rep. Mark Udall (D-Colo.) and a host of forest management experts will discuss questions surrounding those practices at noon this Thursday, Nov. 30, at a special "Hot Topics" luncheon program in Denver sponsored by the CU-Â鶹¹ÙÍø Natural Resources Law Center.
