What happens to a community when it casts itself on the walls that surround it? Using the murals of Boyle Heights, Los Angeles and the recent Indigenous Mural Space executed in the Visual Arts Complex on CU Â鶹¹ÙÍø campus as particular examples, this talk will examine the impact and
function of murals with respect to cultural identity formation, and the creation of community in otherwise oppressive spaces.

Héctor Ramírez received his MFA in Fiction from CU Â鶹¹ÙÍø in 2018, where he produced a novel manuscript centered around Boyle Heights and the murals of that community. He is the Assistant Director of the Upward Bound Program at CU Â鶹¹ÙÍø, and was the project director for the
Indigenous Mural Space.
