Actress Meryl Streep is here to do a one-time performance, reading selections from Philip Roth鈥檚 meditation-on-death novella,听贰惫别谤测尘补苍,听accompanied by a string quartet and a star-struck audience of 900.
The project was born a few years ago when Ed Dusinberre, the British-born first violinist of the Tak谩cs String Quartet, was reading听Everyman, Roth鈥檚 indictment of death, against old age, against the loss of erotic energy that is the source of life. One of its cheerier lines: 鈥淥ld age isn鈥檛 a battle; old age is a massacre.鈥� But Dusinberre, who has a reputation for innovative programming, wondered if听Everyman听could be excerpted and performed with music鈥攕pecifically, with Franz Schubert鈥檚 鈥淒eath and the Maiden鈥�, written shortly before the composer died of syphilis at age 31.
