CU-Â鶹¹ÙÍø Freshman Move-In Days Bring Staff And Students Together

Excited students and eager parents traveling to CU-Â鶹¹ÙÍø in packed cars for freshman move-in days will be greeted by CU faculty and staff on Aug. 18 and Aug. 19. The new freshman class will move into residence halls on Aug. 18 from 8 a.m. to noon and Aug. 19 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Informational tents will be set up to answer questions and provide directions in Farrand Field, Kittredge Commons and Darley Commons. An informational table also will be set up in Sewall Hall.

CU-Â鶹¹ÙÍø Students Win Study Abroad Scholarships To Germany

Several students at the University of Colorado at Â鶹¹ÙÍø have received scholarships from the Max Kade Foundation to study abroad in Germany. The Max Kade Foundation, a German foundation interested in higher education and international exchange, awards travel scholarships to students participating in CU-Â鶹¹ÙÍø exchange programs to Germany. Students Win CU-Â鶹¹ÙÍø Diversity Scholarships

Fourteen students at the University of Colorado at Â鶹¹ÙÍø have been awarded diversity scholarships to study in other countries in 1998-99. Two diversity scholarships, one awarded by CU-Â鶹¹ÙÍø and the other by the Colorado Commission of Higher Education (CCHE), help cover expenses in the Study Abroad program for Colorado residents who are underrepresented on the Â鶹¹ÙÍø campus because they are ethnic minorities or from the state's rural areas.

Students Win CU-Â鶹¹ÙÍø Study Abroad Scholarships

The study abroad program at the University of Colorado at Â鶹¹ÙÍø has awarded $81,100 in scholarship aid to 104 students enrolled in study abroad programs in 1998-99. Eight CU-Â鶹¹ÙÍø students were awarded scholarships to participate in study abroad programs offered through Syracuse University. The aid comes from the program's auxiliary accounts, alumni donations, the Colorado Commission on Higher Education Diversity Fund and foundation donations.

Researchers Discover Church Submerged In Ancient Port City

A University of Colorado at Â鶹¹ÙÍø research team led by history Professor Robert Hohlfelder has discovered the remains of a 1,700-year-old Christian church submerged in shallow water in the Mediterranean Sea off the coast of southern Turkey. The stone church, about 20 meters long and 10 meters wide, apparently was built sometime after 330 A.D. on the shoreline of the ancient city of Aperlae. As the shoreline subsided over the centuries due to earthquake activity, the church gradually sank about six feet into the clear Mediterranean water, said Hohlfelder.

CU-Â鶹¹ÙÍø Researchers Successful In Working To Protect San Miguel River

A University of Colorado at Â鶹¹ÙÍø study of the headwaters of the San Miguel River near Telluride has resulted in amendments to the land use code that will protect the headwater catchments from future degradation. The San Miguel watershed is considered one of the few remaining ecological and hydrological river systems in the West that has remained relatively unchanged. The predominately free-flowing San Miguel extends for 80 miles from high alpine meadows and waterfalls above Telluride to a deep-canyon confluence with the Dolores River.
